| Barry Zuckerman, M.D. |
Barry Zuckerman, M.D. is The Joel and Barbara Alpert Professor of Pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine, Chief of Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center and Family Service of Greater Boston’s 2012 Family Legacy Award recipient. In support of Dr. Zuckerman’s international dedication and leadership in health and child development disparities, Family Service of Greater Boston is honored to award and recognize him for his great contributions. His most important scientific contributions involve identifying factors contributing to low birth weight including drugs, alcohol and maternal health and most recently, gene environment interaction. Dr. Zuckerman’s advocacy for better health has allowed low income families, especially with young children, to better meet their health care needs. His efforts have impacted the health and development of children involved in Family Service’s Strong Start Program by encouraging early education through his program Reach Out and Read, as well as his organization HealthLeads, which is now a national organization that uses college volunteers working in primary care settings for low income children to connect parents with community based resources. Dr. Zuckerman’s accomplishments have been so extraordinary that they have been highlighted by First Lady Michelle Obama as an important service effort! Dr. Zuckerman is an inspiration, not only for our communities in Boston, but internationally as well. We are honored to award Dr. Zuckerman the Family Legacy Award for his outstanding commitment to the most vulnerable members of our communities and their health care needs. Please join us on October 4th in honoring Dr. Zuckerman, and the many members of community who make it possible for us to help families me families. We hope to see you there! | We are delighted to share some wonderful news about our upcoming Family Legacy Gala. |
Charlie Baker, Jr. and Tom Hart have agreed to co-chair the event. Charlie Baker, Jr. is a long time supporter of Family Service of Greater Boston. He first became interested in the agency through his mother, who herself was a fervent supporter. Charlie has achieved major success in the private and public sector. We are thrilled he has agreed to lend his support to this years’ Gala and is looking forward to sharing his passion for the agency with all attendees.
This year’s Family Legacy Award will go to Drs. Eli and Carolyn Newberger, to be presented by last years award recipient, The Honorable Mayor Thomas M. Menino. The theme of our Family Legacy Gala is “Strengthening Boston, One Family at a Time”. As we considered the social and cultural markers that have strengthened families in the Greater Boston area, the work of both Eli and Carolyn jumped to the forefront because of their genuine and profound commitment to the welfare of families. Their philosophy that focuses on the strength and resilience of parent-child relationships, and a practice oriented to compassion and understanding, rather than blame and punishment are perfectly aligned with the mission and vision of Family Service. Now in our 176th year, Family Service of Greater Boston is proud to serve Greater Boston’s most vulnerable children, youth and families through programs that strive to break the cycle of dysfunction across generations. We look forward to observing this ongoing tradition, as one of the nation’s oldest social service organizations, at this year’s event. We sincerely hope you will join us in October to celebrate the success of building healthier communities in the Boston area. Stay tuned for more exciting news as the event draws near… |
